Clay is a fine-grained earth material that is plastic when wet and hardens when heated. It has been used for ceramic art for thousands of years, with some of the earliest pottery dating back 29,000 years.
There are different types of clay like earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain. Sculpting clay requires various tools like loop tools, ribs, and brushes. Techniques include wedging to eliminate air bubbles, and scoring and slipping pieces together.
Once sculpted, pieces are fired in a kiln through bisque and glaze firing to harden the clay and add decorative glazes.
In pottery, a potter's wheel is a machine used in the shaping (known as throwing) of clay into round ceramic ware. The wheel may also be used during the process of trimming excess clay from leather-hard dried ware that is stiff but malleable, and for applying incised decoration or rings of colour.
As a child I was encouraged to be a creative maker. There was always a sewing project in process, a sketch pad being filled, or a necklace to be strung. Before my introduction to ceramic art in the tenth grade, clay was the sticky orange residue on my boots, or the fun and malleable material my sister and I would play with in the creek on our farm.
Envision a cabin or a woven basket: both are constructed in a linear manner and demonstrate a labor of love. In the cabin, one log is stacked carefully atop the others, while in the basket, one pass of the weft continuously interweaves with the warp.
Ceramics, ah, what an exquisite form of expression! It's like molding your imagination into tangible forms. This art form is not about mastering complicated techniques or buying fancy equipment.
Making pottery is a fun way to make ornamental ceramics or practical objects for your home; functional tableware, vessels, sculpture, installations, and mixed media—the possibilities in pottery are endless!
In this guide, you will learn the best ways to get started making pottery and what tools and equipment you will need to begin.
